How to Choose the Right Watch Size for Your Wrist and Style ?

Many people make mistakes when choosing their watch size. We’re going to explain why vintage watches are often ideal for many wrists, whereas modern models don’t always fit as well.

Today, watches with diameters over 36 mm dominate the market. Yet, just a few decades ago, these sizes were considered “jumbo” models! Many people misjudge the size of vintage watches and think they’re too small for them. Think again — they’re often the perfect fit for your wrist.

We’re passionate about watches made between the 1950s and 1980s, a golden era that gave birth to true masterpieces: the Constellation, Submariner, Speedmaster, Nautilus, Royal Oak… all designed with perfectly balanced proportions.

We truly believe that the right sizes have been forgotten. Although often criticized, Rolex remains one of the few brands to offer a wide range of sizes suitable for every wrist. Who today can gracefully wear a 39 mm Calatrava or a large 39.5 mm Ellipse? Very few people.

That’s precisely where the charm of vintage and collectible watches lies.

Tips for Choosing a Vintage Dress Watch

A Balanced Approach

Wrist under 16 cm:
A timepiece no larger than 32 mm will look perfectly refined on you. Don’t hesitate to go for smaller diameters — they’re elegant and sophisticated. Depending on your personal style, even a 26 mm or smaller watch might surprise you with its chic and delicate appeal.

Wrist between 16 and 18 cm:
A vintage dress watch between 32 and 36 mm will be ideal. For instance, a 33 mm model fits beautifully on a 17 cm wrist.

Wrist over 18 cm:
You’re among the few who can wear a 39 mm dress watch gracefully. However, depending on the case shape, a 36 mm could suit you just as well. If you prefer a more robust look, consider a tool watch and pair it with a leather strap — it will give it a more refined, dressy appearance.

A dress watch is a piece of jewelry. It should subtly reveal itself beneath a shirt cuff, adding a discreet touch of sophistication. Its charm lies in its slender lines, perfectly matched to the size of your wrist. True elegance is all about subtlety.

Sports and Tool Watches: A Category of Their Own

The only case where a larger diameter truly makes sense is with professional watches. These timepieces are designed for readability and performance — whether for diving, aviation, or precise timing. They must be easy to read quickly and efficiently.

That said, a 42 mm watch is clearly not ideal for a 16 cm wrist, even if its purpose justifies it. For instance, I own a 42 mm Speedmaster for my 16.5 cm wrist, but I view it first and foremost as a genuine lunar tool watch!

In Summary

Choosing the right watch diameter is all about finding a balance between comfort, aesthetics, and personal style.

Here are a few tips to guide you:

  • Measure your wrist: The first step to choosing the right size.
  • Match the diameter to the style: Dress watch or sports model?
  • Consider the thickness: A case that’s too thick will look bulky.
  • Case shape: It can enhance or diminish how the watch sits on your wrist (think elliptical, tank, etc.).
  • Lug-to-lug length: Pay attention to the distance between the lugs — it shouldn’t extend past your wrist.
  • Strap type: Leather tends to slim down the overall look, while steel or gold bracelets make it appear more substantial.
  • Lug width: This determines the strap width and contributes to the character of the watch.
  • Dial size: A larger opening can make the watch seem bigger on the wrist.
  • Dial color: Light or bright tones make the watch appear larger, while darker shades keep it more discreet.
  • Try it on before buying: Nothing replaces the feeling of seeing how it truly fits your wrist!
